I don't like academic study of history.

It took college to make me realize that.

I don't write poetry, but when I sat in the Classical Civ class, I wrote poems. At the time I didn't realize that that might indicate that I wasn't listening to the professor.

Today I decided to catch up on some reading from another class. I opened A History of Islamic Societies. Now, after reading for a while I remember something about the angst of Protestants in Europe because they had cut themselves off from art, music, and confession. Somehow I don't think that was what my professor really wanted us to gather from the reading. There was also something about some guy who made his sons and grandsons governors but would move them around all the time to keep from losing authority. There were also some funny names.

Perhaps that is what my professor wanted me to remember!

I am impressed with what I once was, but tired by what I am.

For the summer of 2004 I worked full time as an office manager for a startup company. I also took four classes (early mornings and nights) and cleaned houses on Saturdays.

This summer I have worked full time (okay, slightly longer hours) for the same company, and cleaned houses. I probably could not have handled even one class.

I ponder all of this as I eat yogurt and cereal. Something about it is wrong. Oh, that's right. I forgot that I decided yesterday to go vegan for a while. This is rather like the many nights this summer that I have had to turn around because I drove the wrong way "home" without thinking.

I want to go to sleep. Instead I will shower, show up for one final day of cleaning, do a lot of my own laundry, pack, drive to school, leave the car with boxes, and head for NYC. Do you know that I have only really been there once?

Emma

I hate Jane Austen's Emma. I don't know why other people like Emma. She is not spunky and wonderful, she is horrible and makes me sad.

Okay, so I've not read the book or watched the movies in years, but once in a while something happens that makes me think of Mr. Knightly scolding Emma and I feel sick all over again. I hate that. I hate that I deserve it. The fact that he forgives her does not make it any better. Pride and Prejudice is way better because they are all brats in funny ways. No, I hate Emma.
